The visiting San Francisco Giants hope Adrian Houser will benefit from a return to familiar territory when they close their four-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday afternoon.
Houser (2-5, 5.59 ERA), who pitched in 129 games with Milwaukee over parts of his first seven seasons in the majors, will oppose fellow right-hander Coleman Crow (0-0, 3.14) of the Brewers.
After dropping the first two games of the series by a combined score of 24-5, the Giants responded with a 1-0 win on Wednesday. Logan Webb took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning, and Victor Bericoto hit his first career homer, off starter Robert Gasser.
Brice Turang broke up Webb's no-hit bid with a one-out single in the seventh. Webb, making his second start since coming off the injured list, improved to 5-0 with a 1.79 ERA in eight career starts against the Brewers.
Keaton Winn stranded the tying run at third base in the ninth inning for his first save this season.
The National League Central-leading Brewers are 19-6 in their last 25 games. Milwaukee, which was shut out for the third time this season, is 31-4 when scoring at least four runs but is just 6-18 when scoring three or less.
'We're technically in first place, but we're not looking at that. We're trying to get better,' Brewers manager Pat Murphy said.
The Giants, who entered Wednesday with the worst record in the National League, are 6-14 in their last 20 games.
Giants outfielder Jung Hoo Lee had two singles on Wednesday to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, matching his career high. Lee is batting .488 with two doubles, a triple, one homer and six RBIs over that span.
Houser lasted just 3 2/3 innings in his last start, giving up four runs on eight hits and taking the loss in an 8-3 defeat at Colorado on Saturday.
'I felt good in the bullpen,' Houser said afterward. 'Everything was good, mechanics felt good. And then as soon as I got out on the mound, it was like I couldn't really feel anything. I was struggling to find the mechanics in that first inning. I wasn't able to execute like I wanted to tonight.'
Houser pitched well in May, going 2-2 with a 3.81 ERA in five starts after going 0-3 with a 7.12 ERA in six starts in April.
He will face the Brewers for the first time in his career. He is 12-16 with a 3.61 ERA in 66 games, including 48 starts, at American Family Field.
Left-handed reliever Matt Gage, who had a 2.63 ERA in a team-high 29 appearances with the Giants, was placed on the 15-day injured list before Wednesday's game with right knee inflammation. Right-hander Dylan Smith was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento.
Crow, who has split time between Milwaukee and Triple-A Nashville, will make his fourth start for the Brewers and his first vs. the Giants.
In his most recent start, Crow allowed four runs (two earned) in four innings but did not get the decision in a 5-4, 10-inning win at Houston on Friday. Opponents are batting .211 against him.
