Texas smothers TCU for second straight victory

Timmy Allen scored 16 points to lead four teammates in double-figure scoring as visiting Texas crushed TCU 73-50 on Tuesday in Big 12 Conference play in Fort Worth, Texas.

The Longhorns (15-5, 5-3 Big 12) overwhelmed TCU with a dominating defensive performance in the first half, using balanced scoring and stifling pressure on the Horned Frogs' outside shots to build a 20-point halftime lead.

Texas, which fell out of the AP Top 25 on Monday for the first time this season, won its second straight game. The Longhorns have beaten TCU six times in a row.

The Longhorns entered the game leading the nation in scoring defense at 54.9 points per game and lowered that mark on Tuesday. Texas improved to 15-0 this season when holding its opponents below 60 points.

Courtney Ramey added 14 points for Texas, Andrew Jones had 12 and Marcus Carr 11.

Mike Miles led TCU (13-4, 3-3) with 14 points, while Emanuel Miller added 13 points. The Horned Frogs, who shot just 36 percent from the floor, including 2-of-16 from beyond the arc.

The game was tied at 10-10 after Eddie Lampkin's layup with 13:47 to play in the first half. Texas then forged an 11-0 run over the next 3 1/2 minutes capped by Tre Mitchell's layup at the 10:16 mark.

TCU climbed back to within 23-16 on two free throws by Lampkin with 8:16 to play in the half before the Longhorns' defense took control again, keeping the Horned Frogs without a field goal for more than eight minutes while building a 43-23 advantage at the break.

Allen poured in 12 points to lead all scorers in the first half while Ramey added 10. Texas outshot the Horned Frogs 48.5 percent to 30.8 percent in the half, outrebounded TCU 24-14.

Miles paced the Horned Frogs with nine points in the half, and TCU was 0 for 9 from 3-point range.

The second half was mostly even, with TCU never getting closer than 15 points.
