Dallas Cowboys starting cornerback Chidobe Awuzie is likely to miss multiple weeks after injuring his hamstring last Sunday, coach Mike McCarthy said Wednesday.

The injury could land the fourth-year player on short-term injured reserve.

Awuzie, 25, was injured on special teams in the fourth quarter of the Cowboys' wild victory over Atlanta on Sunday.

Awuzie is the latest injury to a defense beset with short-term IR stints to linebackers Leighton Vander Esch and Sean Lee and cornerback Anthony Brown.

McCarthy said Brandon Carr -- signed from the practice squad last week -- will get work at cornerback and safety. Rookie Trevon Diggs started the first two games opposite Awuzie and Darian Worley is primarily a cornerback. Jourdan Lewis also returned last week after an ankle injury.

"We're going to work all those combinations. I'm really not going to get into who's playing where," McCarthy said. "Obviously with the number of changes we've had week to week, we're going to work different combinations and when we get to the end, we'll decide exactly how they're going to line up."

Awuzie had an interception, two passed defensed and three tackles in the first two games. He has played in 43 games (38 starts) for the Cowboys, who drafted him in the second round in 2017.
