HOUSTON, May 26 (Xinhua) -- U.S. state of Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced Tuesday that more businesses in Texas can reopen this week while the COVID-19 pandemic is still spreading in the state.

Abbott said food court dining areas in shopping malls and driver's education programs can reopen immediately. Beginning this Friday, water parks can reopen with 25 percent capacity. Starting Sunday, recreational sports programs for adults can be resumed.

Last week, Abbott allowed daycares, bars and bowling alleys to reopen as part of the second phase of opening up of the state's businesses.

In the past Memorial Day weekend, Texas saw increasing number of people enjoying outdoor activities. Local media reported around 500,000 people went to Galveston, an island along the Gulf Coast of Texas.

As of May 25, Texas Health and Human Services reported 56,560 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with more than 1,500 fatalities.
