TEHRAN, Iran - Iran on Saturday threw down the gauntlet to the United States, demanding it provide proof to its claim that Iran was behind the attack on the Saudi Aramco oil facilities last year.

The U.S. immediately blamed Iran after the Saudi oil infrastructure was hit by a number of drone-delivered missiles, which were successful in shutting the facility down for several weeks, - severely disrupting international oil supplies.

Iran denied the allegation.

Iran was also blamed last year for attacks on oil tankers off the coast of Oman and the northern UAE emirate of Fujairah, by the United States, although the UAE fell short of naming Iran as the aggressor.

On Saturday the Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations released a statement on what it describes as a U.S. disinformation campaign against Iran.

"Media note of the U.S. Mission on 13 February represents another disinformation campaign against Iran. Just hours after the attack on Saudi oil facilities on 14 September 2019, the U.S. baselessly attributed it to Iran, but has failed so far to present any shred of evidence. Now, it clutches at every straw to seemingly prove its allegation. The latest example is its resort to the recent report of the Panel of Experts on Yemen. But nothing in that report validates the U.S. allegation, which has already been rejected by Iran," the statement said.

"Massive buildup of the U.S. forces in the region and its military adventurism as well as the unprecedented flow of American sophisticated weaponry to its regional allies and partners are the main sources of instability and insecurity in the Persian Gulf. Instead of accusing others, the U.S. must put an end to all its divisive policies and destabilizing activities in the region."

"While the U.S. has clearly violated Security Council resolution 2231 and, in an unprecedented move in the history of the United Nations, is threatening other member states, either to disobey that resolution or face punishment, its current comment thereon is yet another desperate attempt to undermine its implementation. So, if anything has to be addressed in connection with that resolution, it is, first and foremost, the material breach of the resolution by the U.S., the statement by the Iranian missiom to the United Nations said.
